Munnar is a hill station located in the Idduki district of Indian state of Kerela. It is situated in the Western Ghats range of mountains at around 1600 meters above sea level.

Tea is the most commonly drunk beverage in India. Munnar has the most attractive tea plantations in the world. There are over 50 tea estates in and around Munnar, most of which are owned by TATA Group. A trip to Munnar is incomplete without having a visit to these tea estates.

Eravikulam National Park


Eravikulam National Park which is also known as Rajmalai National Park, is the first national park in Kerela, which holds the largest population of Nilgiri Tahr, many other species of rare animals, birds and butterflies. The park offers a magnificent view of three major types of plant communities grasslands, shrublands and forests. Visitors have to take a forest department vehicle to visit the park as the private vehicles are not allowed. Anamudi which is the highest peak of South Himalayas is located in the core area of this park.

Mattupetty Dam and lake is one of the major attractions in Munnar, located 13 kms away from the town. The Dam is surrounded by the lush green tea plantation and the rolling grasslands. The tea garden around are reflected in the still water of dam which makes it very scenic. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki provides boating facilities in the Mattupetty Dam which makes it an ideal spot for picnic.

The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate was set up by British in 1930s. This is the lesser-known plantation heaven located about 38 kms from Munnar. As it is located at the state border, it has views of both Tamil Nadu and Kerela. The tea factory at this estate uses the original equipment’s and the old techniques to process its tea. They also have “Make Your Tea” programme which enable visitors to make their own cup of tea.

Attukal Waterfalls is one of the very attractive waterfall in Munnar. It is situated amidst dense jungle and can be reached through a narrow bridge. The flowing water looks like a shining silver line, but as you come closer you see water cascading and roaring from an elevated height. This place is a ideal for trekking and hiking.
